![]() This diagnosis served as a precursor to the modern diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), for which amphetamine and related stimulants are accepted treatments ( Huang & Tsai, 2011). In the late 1950s however, amphetamine began to gain favor as a treatment for “minimal brain dysfunction”, a pediatric condition characterized by hyperactivity, inattention, and poor impulse control (For a review see: Lange, Reichl, Lange, Tucha, & Tucha, 2010). The cognition-enhancing properties of amphetamine were recognized early in development, but it was not marketed for this purpose due to concerns of addiction and safety (For a review see Rasmussen, 2006). Initial marketing of amphetamine compounds focused on treatment of narcolepsy, postencephalitic parkinsonism, and depression, while a large unregulated market developed for diet pills containing amphetamine. ![]() Preparations of amphetamine have been used medicinally in the United States for nearly a century, originating with Benzedrine, intended for use as a decongestant. ![]()
